CWTS UGM Conducted Opening Talk Show Session and Launched Brand New Podcast on The International Policy Workshop on Trade, Circular Economy and Sustainability 21-22 September 2021

Center for World Trade Studies Universitas Gadjah Mada (CWTS UGM) held the “International Policy Workshop on Trade, Circular Economy and Sustainability: Forging Knowledge Co-Production on International Trade and Circular Economy Linkages in Developing Countries” virtually on Tuesday (21/9/21) and Wednesday (22/9/21). This workshop brought together researchers with fellow researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and the general public to encourage initiatives and policies for circular economy development in developing countries. The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Riza Noer Arfani as the Director of CWTS UGM and drg. Ika Dewi Ana, Ph.D as the Vice-Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada. Ambassador Xiangchen Zhang from the Deputy Director-General of the WTO and H.E. Monique T.G. Van Daalen as the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the WTO also expressed their support for the workshop in their welcoming remarks.

The workshop started with a talk show hosted by Dr. Maharani Hapsari and Thifani Tiara Ranti. This talk show also marked the launch of CWTS’s “Starting Point” podcast, which will become a learning medium for circular economy practices and policies in Indonesia. The talk show speakers, namely Hamim Pou as the Regent of Bone Bolango (Gorontalo), Agustinus Taolin as the Regent of Belu (East Nusa Tenggara), and Rendy Aditya Wachid as the CEO of Parongpong RAW Lab, shared their experiences in encouraging the circular economy implementation by involving government institutions, private sector, and local communities in their respective regions. The speakers agreed that the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy can start from the regional level and even from the household level.

Regent Hamim pushes the circular economy implementation by putting MSMEs in Bone Bolango as its driving force and enforcing various regional environmental conservation policies. Bone Bolango also takes part in the initiative by turning wood and plastic waste in Botubarani Whale Sharks Tourism Site into souvenirs. In Belu, Regent Taolin sees the importance of socialising the concept of circular economy to the local community and involving them in waste management activities, renewable energy development (derived from wind, sun, and biogas from livestock waste), as well as agricultural empowerment.

Besides starting the initiative at the policy and government levels, CEO Rendy of Parongpong RAW Lab has proven that business can also be conducted in a circular and profitable manner by choosing the right business model. Seeing problems as things that must be solved and not as things that must continue to be monetized has become Rendy’s motto in running his business. With his background as an architect, Rendy continues to innovate by creating various kinds of building materials and products that are environmentally friendly and efficient in the production process. His company’s efforts include processing disposable masks waste as a substitute for sand.

This talk show also invited Dr. Rima Prama Artha as the representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Dr. Rima delivered a presentation on “The Economic, Social and Environmental Benefits of A Circular Economy in Indonesia.” The presentation is based on a collaborative report from UNDP, the Embassy of Denmark in Jakarta, and the National Development Agency (BAPPENAS). From the economic and social sustainability perspective, it is stated that the circular economy could increase Indonesia’s GDP significantly and create 4.4 million new jobs in 2030, in which three-quarters of it will be filled by women. As the circular economy also pays attention to environmental sustainability, the circular economy implementation could contribute remarkably in fulfilling Indonesia’s CO2 emission reduction target – around 29% with national efforts or 49% with international support by 2030. To achieve these targets, Indonesia needs to foster effective waste management by producers besides increasing consumer awareness.

This workshop is expected to be a starting point for all of us to rethink the economic system, production, and consumption patterns that have been adversely impacting the environment.

PSPD UGM Adakan Talk Show dan Luncurkan Siniar dalam Pembukaan Lokakarya Kebijakan Internasional terkait Perdagangan, Ekonomi Sirkular dan Keberlanjutan

Pusat Studi Perdagangan Dunia Universitas Gadjah Mada (PSPD UGM) menyelenggarakan lokakarya kebijakan internasional bertajuk: “International Policy Workshop on Trade, Circular Economy and Sustainability: Forging Knowledge Co-Production on International Trade and Circular Economy Linkages in Developing Countries”  secara virtual pada Selasa (21/9/21) dan Rabu (22/9/21). Ika Dewi Ana, Ph.D. Duta besar Xiangchen Zhang selaku Deputi Direktur-Jenderal WTO dan H.E. Mrs. Monique T.G.
